This phrase originated from the Apollo 13 mission, a manned space flight program led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1970.

After the launch of NASA's Apollo 13 space flight mission, also known as the "most successful failure" in the history of space development, an oxygen tank explosion occurred when it was about 320,000 km away. From this point on, Apollo 13's mission changed from lunar exploration to a safe return. Thanks to the Abort-Guidance System (AGS), the three astronauts were able to return safely.
