However, the aircraft stored in rows feel like a cemetery or grave, earning it the nickname "the tomb of airplanes." To store aircraft for a long time while minimizing corrosion, it is easier to manage them in places with low humidity, so most aircraft graveyards are located in desert areas. In 1945, the U.S. military needed a place to store aircraft left behind after World War II and searched for the best location. The Tucson area was ideal for storing aircraft due to its low humidity and precipitation, and the lack of civilians living around the site. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base currently stores over 4,000 aircraft, including those in need of maintenance as well as those that will not be used in the future.
